Become a part of the excitement at our competitions by volunteering at FIRST Tech Challenge events! Event volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring our competitions run smoothly and create a positive experience for everyone involved.
Requires 1 full Saturday commitment on a competition day (see events page for competition dates). No matter your background or skill set, there’s a volunteer opportunity that’s right for you. No prior experience necessary—training will be provided! Opportunities include:

Judges:  Our FTC Program is in most need of Competition Judges. The primary role of a judge is to interview teams, and to decide which teams deserve an award based on team interviews, the robot, match play, and the engineering portfolio.
Referees: See robot matches up close, watching matches to call penalties and tracking the status of the match.
Scorekeepers: Ensure scoring accuracy and help with robot inspections to verify they meet all competition guidelines.
Field Reset and Game Announcers: Keep the competition running seamlessly by helping reset the field between matches, or lend your voice to the excitement as an announcer.

Volunteers at events experience the thrill of robotics competitions while helping create a positive, safe, and educational environment for all participants. Your time and effort make a difference in the lives of young engineers!

Mentor or Coach a Team

Do you enjoy problem-solving, teaching, and being a positive role model? Consider becoming a mentor or coach for a FIRST Tech Challenge team. Mentors and coaches guide students through the season as they design, build, and program their robot, helping them to develop technical skills, teamwork, and critical thinking. Commitment is flexible! Serve as a resource on a one-time or multiple-time basis.

What Do Mentors and Coaches Do?
  • Support and Encourage: Foster a positive environment that empowers students to take ownership of their learning.
  • Share Expertise & Provide Guidance: Share your knowledge in STEM fields or project management to help teams reach their goals.
    • Mechanical Engineering, Programming/Software Engineering (Java), Electrical Engineering
    • CAD
    • Help team members apply and understand engineering concepts
    • Machining and Fabrication
    • Finance / Fundraising / Grants
  • Inspire Your Future Workforce! Talk with a team about your career or job in a STEM field.
  • Be a Role Model: Demonstrate the values of Gracious Professionalism and cooperation, encouraging students to do their best and respect others.

Mentoring is about more than just building a robot—it’s about helping students build confidence, resilience, and curiosity. You don’t need to be a technical expert; just bring your enthusiasm and desire to learn alongside the students.
